Custodian Dice is an abstract game for 2 players played on a 5×5 grid.
The game centres around moving dice around to try and surround your opponent’s pieces on both sides in an effort to capture them.
The first player to successfully capture the other’s pieces wins the game.
Game set up and ready to play
The game was created as part of a challenge to design 12 different tiny abstract games all played on a 5×5 grid.
At the time of writing this, only two have been made so far: this, and Collateral Checkers.
In a sense, Custodian Dice is a spiritual successor to Arms Race Chess, in the sense that both of them involve moving dice around on a board and capturing your opponent’s dice.
That being said, I personally like this game a lot better, mostly because it doesn’t suffer from the confusing “die face number ≠ points scored” issue that I never resolved in the other game.
Materials
To play this game you need
- A 5×5 game board. The one from Onitama or Tak will suffice.
- 5 white dice (d6)
- 5 black dice (d6)
Although, any two colours will work, as long as they’re different.
