No Pair

No Pair came about as the result of a few design challenges:

  • Make a 3 dice game where pairs are bad.
  • Make a game whose rules fit entirely on one side of a business card.

The game itself plays like a cross between Pass the Pigs and Yahtzee.

Rules in Detail

Since the business card is a bit cramped, allow me to use this page to clarify some things.

At the start of every turn you roll three dice.
Then, if you are unsatisfied with your result, you may reroll up to three dice again, keeping any that you do not wish to change, exactly like in Yahtzee/Kniffel.

After any of your three rolls, you may stop and write down the score for the dice result.

If the result is a pair (two dice with the same number), then nothing is scored for that round.

If the result is a run (three dice in numeric sequence), then you add the three numbers together.
So for example, if you rolled 1 2 3, then you would write down 6 as your score. If you rolled 4 5 6, then the result of that would be 15.

If the result is a triplet (three dice of the same value), then you add the three numbers together, then multiply the result of that by 2.
For example, 1 1 1 would be 6 points, and 6 6 6 would be 36 points.

If the result is anything else, such as 2 3 6, then the result of that roll is the lowest valued die. In the case of 2 3 6 it would be 2.

The game continues like this until someone scores 60 points.

If you like, you can change the goal to any value you like, but 60 seemed like a good place to start.
